Psychological evaluations and testing at Therapy Utah in Utah

What a psychological evaluation actually is

Think of it the way a medical doctor approaches a symptom that won’t go away — with the right tests, you finally get a real answer instead of a guess.

Have you ever had a physical symptom that just seemed to drag on too long? You’d see a doctor, who’d order the right tests and then build a treatment around what those results showed. Psychological evaluations work much the same way. When mental health concerns appear to be lasting longer than six months without a known cause, our psychologist talks with you in depth about your specific symptoms, then chooses the tests most likely to give you a clear, useful answer.

A psychological evaluation is a careful diagnostic process. It can help confirm a diagnosis, point to the right kind of treatment, and give you language for something that’s been hard to explain. If you’re already working with us, it fits naturally alongside our other therapy services and individual therapy.

What an evaluation can help clarify

Our psychologist uses testing to better understand three areas that often overlap.

Thought processes

How you take in, organize, and make sense of information — and where patterns in your thinking may be getting in the way.

Behaviors

Patterns that have been hard to shift on their own, including symptoms tied to ADD, ADHD, and other behavioral concerns.

Memory & learning

How well memory and learning are working, which can be central to clarifying a diagnosis and the support you need.

Depending on your situation, an evaluation may help create a custom treatment plan, identify the underlying cause of specific symptoms, anticipate future challenges tied to a condition, update findings from a previous evaluation, or diagnose a disorder that calls for specialty treatment. Our on-site psychologist also performs assessments for therapy clients — adults, couples, families, and children or adolescents — that help us match each client with a therapist whose approach fits their needs.

Consider an evaluation if you’ve been

People come in for psychological testing for all kinds of reasons. A few of the most common.

  • Recommended one after a hospital stay
  • Mandated by a court order
  • Required by a school, long-term care facility, nursing home, or prison
  • Referred by a GP or family doctor
  • Living with symptoms that have lasted longer than six months without a clear cause
  • Looking for a diagnosis before pursuing medication or specialty care

What to expect

We keep the process clear and personal from your first call through your results.

1

An in-depth interview

Your evaluation starts with a thorough conversation about your history and the specific symptoms you’ve been dealing with, so testing is built around your situation.

2

The right tests for you

Based on that conversation, our psychologist selects the assessments most likely to give you a clear, reliable answer rather than running a fixed checklist.

3

Results that guide next steps

You and your therapist get a clearer understanding of your needs, including any diagnosis, so you can pursue the right treatment, medication, or specialty support.

Who should have a psychological evaluation?

All kinds of people, for all kinds of reasons — including people recommended one after a hospital stay, those mandated by a court, individuals required by a school, care facility, or prison, and people referred by a GP or family doctor.
