Meet Kathy Kinghorn

The co-owner and CEO of Therapy Utah, Kathy Kinghorn is an expert in sex and pornography addiction, betrayal trauma, childhood trauma, and sexual abuse. Her unique vision and specialized training provide essential support for clients from all walks of life and are cornerstones of Therapy Utah’s continued success.

Who is Kathy Kinghorn?

As the co-owner and CEO of Therapy Utah, Kathy Kinghorn is an expert in treating addiction and trauma of all kinds.

Kathy spent 20 years in the corporate world before transitioning to therapy and training under Dr. Patrick Carnes. She is a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT) Supervisor who has spoken at numerous national conferences, symposiums, webinars, and local venues. She is on the advisory board for Sundance Canyon Academy, a Field Instructor for the University of Utah, and she teaches part-time at University of Kentucky. She is also the author of the ebook, ‘The Long Road to Recovery’ and the voice of ThreeMinuteTherapist.

Kathy believes strongly in helping others improve their lives, and works hard to help every client discover new ways of seeing themselves and the world around them. Her leadership has been a key part of shaping Therapy Utah’s unique holistic approach to recovery—from individual therapy to group initiatives like the LIFT Program, which she leads for clients who are working to overcome Betrayal Trauma.

Areas of Expertise

In addition to specializing in betrayal trauma and sex addiction, Kathy also works with patients who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. She is trained in the following methodologies:

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Developed in the 1980s, IFS is based on the idea that the mind naturally contains multiple “inner parts”, each with their own unique qualities. IFS aims to help each client understand and harmonize these parts so that they can work together for the benefit of the whole individual.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This therapy method involves identifying unhelpful patterns of thinking (“cognitive distortions”) and their impacts on behavior so that new patterns and resultant behaviors can emerge. It is frequently used to help clients suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, relationship problems, and more.

Statement from Kathy

Kathy Kinghorn

If you want to get to the ‘why’ of your addiction, get farther from the ‘want’ of your addiction. I specialize in helping individuals gain tools to reduce the ‘want’ and then find space to understand the ‘why’.

I consider myself a Hope Merchant. I sell hope. I sell hope to individuals and couples that have had their whole world turned upside down and are struggling to believe that hope exists. If you find yourself in this space where hope feels too big to navigate, take a step back and start with hanging on to the hope that hope exists.

If you only have the hope for hope, that is a good enough place to start.”
